Central, Coastal and Deep South
In addition to the quaint coastal town of Lüderitz, the top tourist attractions in the southern coastal region are the captivating desert horses found west of Aus, especially at the water point at Garub; Namibia’s most famous ghost town, Kolmanskop, a former diamond settlement that stopped functioning as a diamond outlet in the 1950s; and the Northern Sperrgebiet, which can be seen with tour operators holding concessions in the area.
Highlights of the central southern region include curiosities like Duwisib Castle, the Quiver Tree Forest, Giant’s Playground and the Brukkaros Mountain, not an extinct volcano as is often thought but the remnants of a gaseous explosion that took place many millions of years ago, and the Kalahari Desert with its long, linear dunes of ancient red sands and scattered settlements of Bushmen, which can be visited with tour operators. The unofficial capital of the south, Keetmanshoop, lies at the centre of this region and is the gateway to many of these attractions.
The highlight in the deep southern region is the Fish River Canyon, Namibia’s most spectacular geological phenomenon and second in grandeur only to the Grand Canyon in North America. The canyon lies in the lower reaches of Namibia’s longest river, the Fish, and took millions of years to evolve to its present shape, a massive 161 km long and 27 km wide, with a varying depth of 550 m.
