NWR Fish River Canyon & Hobas Campsite - Deep South
The Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, and one of the most impressive natural features in the southern part of Namibia. The massive ravine, gouged out of the surface of the land many millions of years ago, is 550 m deep in places and about 160 km long. The Fish River flows intermittently in the late summer months, drying up as the year progresses to become a series of long narrow pools on the sandy rock-strewn floor of the chasm. The Fish River Hiking Trail extends over 85 km from the main lookout point to Ai-Ais. It is self-guided and usually takes four to five days to complete. Due to extreme temperatures and the risk of flash flooding in summer, the trail is open only from 15 April to 15 September. Groups must consist of a minimum of three people and maximum of 40. Medical certificates of physical fitness issued within the previous 40 days need to be shown at Hobas before starting on the hike.

Situated some 70 km north of Ai-Ais and 10 km from the main viewpoint along the access road to the canyon, is the Hobas Camping Site with communal ablution facilities, a kiosk with basic supplies and a swimming pool. Hobas is the official viewpoint to the Fish River Canyon. Driving out from Hobas, the first viewpoint you reach is known as the Main Viewpoint. The view from here is the one that appears in most publicity brochures and there are several shaded picnic tables and barbecue facilities here. As the viewpoint is westward facing, early morning rather than late afternoon is the best time to come here.

Fish River Lodge - Deep South
Imagine waking to a view so surreal that you think you’re still dreaming. Endless vistas in gorgeous pastel hues; your bedroom a skilfully designed haven that at every turn leaves you in awe of your surroundings; delicate cotton linens, natural tones that echo the view, textures that soothe… this is a sanctuary you’ll be hard pressed to leave.
But leave it you must … the chefs will fortify you for a day of discovery with piles of fluffy eggs, crisp bacon, fragrant roasted tomatoes and a rainbow of exquisite fresh fruit.  After one last impossibly aromatic coffee, your guide will lead you to his cruiser.

The pre-exploration talk will give you an idea of the rugged journey you are about to undertake. As with many of life’s experiences, the adventure will become an unforgettable chapter in your memoirs. The drive starts on the plateau and gradually winds its way down into the canyon. Is it possible that such a harsh environment can be home to such a diversity of wildlife?
The black-backed jackal greets you with his eerie howl, a herd of mountain zebra canter up an impossible slope and a diminutive klipspringer clings to his tiny precipice. The morning passes and soon you find yourself climbing over smooth boulders to an extraordinary picnic site on the edge of a natural pool. The water is invigorating and unaccountably you are more than ready for the feast that is spread out before you.

From the comfort of your bed you can enjoy spectacular views as the sun rises and sets over the main canyon. Black eagles enjoy the thermal updrafts and fascinating desert-adapted plants thrive among the rocks in the forest of ancient quiver trees surrounding the lodge. Rare mountain zebra and elusive klipspringer wander the remote valleys and side canyons.
With 45 000 hectares situated in the Canyon Nature Park, including 50 kilometres of river frontage, your visit can be as adventurous or as tranquil as you like. If you are more energetic, you can walk along the rim of the canyon or visit archaeological sites, undertake guided hikes and trips down into the heart of the canyon, or you can simply relax on the deck of the lodge and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The 20 comfortable chalets offer you privacy, including indoor and outdoor showers. The main lodge is stylishly decorated with a large deck overlooking the canyon.

Kulala Wilderness Camp & Kulala Desert Lodge
Magnificent views of the famous dunes of Sossusvlei, breathtaking mountain scenery and vast open plains - Kulala Desert Lodge has these in bulk. The "kulalas" ("to sleep" in Oshiwambo) each with en-suite bathrooms and verandas, built on a wooden platform with a flat rooftop to view or sleep under the myriad stars that Namibia's clear skies portray. The main area, with décor inspired by northern Africa, has a lounge, bar, dining area, small pool, and wrap-around veranda overlooking the waterhole - a perfect location to view and photograph the desert vista.

Nearby world-famous Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous red sand dunes – the most well-known being Dune 45 – that have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously refashioning their contours. The "vlei" itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turnaround, it transforms into a spectacular turquoise lake.

Both Camps cater mainly to the self-drive market but guided excursions and game drives are offered at additional cost (or included if booked on the Fully Inclusive rate) from the camp. These trips include: Excursions to Sossusvlei, the Sesriem Canyon and Naukluft Mountains, walking the Moringa Trail and Balloon Safaris (additional cost; closed between 15 January and 15 February).

The Desert Homestead & Horse Trails - Namib Naukluft
The newly rebuilt Desert Homestead has been skillfully designed to incorporate all the features that guests loved about the original lodge, whilst enjoying the benefit of a pristine location only 31.5km from Sesriem.

The twenty thatched chalets ensure our guests a more comfortable stay, and needless to say, the little touches that characterise Homestead hospitality are still evident everywhere.
Meals can be savoured in our romantic indoor dining room complete with candles and fireplace, or alternately on our traditional wide farm verandah, with lanterns and stars adding to the ambience.

On the activities front, we have become a popular destination for keen horse riders.  All our horses are well schooled, though we do have more lively horses for experienced riders and a selection of peaceful mounts for beginners.  We also offer sundowner drives, guided walks, Sossusvlei and Naukluft excursions…ballooning, scenic flights and quad biking can all be arranged.
We recommend at least a two-night-stay, but if you can squeeze in a third night, hikes in the Naukluft Mountains beckons followed by an invigorating dip in the jewel like rock pools.
