Namibia Holiday & Travel - Parks & Reserves

National Parks  |  Conservancies  |  Private Reserves  |  Transfrontier Parks

Some conservation areas in Namibia are owned and managed by Government and others by the private sector, for instance by farmers in commercial farming areas and local communities in communal areas.

Namibia’s state-run reserves and game parks occupy almost 18% of the surface area of Namibia, mostly in the west and north of the country. They are owned by Government and managed on its behalf by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), Directorate Parks and Wildlife Management. The Directorate is responsible for the registration and proclamation of private game reserves and conservancies where necessary. Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) manages most of the government-owned resorts in these parks and reserves, while the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) controls their grading and standards.

Two exciting developments took place during 2009. Soon to be proclaimed is the Namib-Skeleton Coast National Park (NSCNP), an area that will extend along the entire Namibian coastline from the Kunene River in the north to the Orange River in the south, a distance of some 1 570 km. It will comprise the Skeleton Coast Park, the National West Coast Tourist Recreational Area, the Namib-Naukluft Park and the newly proclaimed Sperrgebiet National Park. The second of the developments was the declaration of Namibia’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA), which extends from Meob Bay north of Lüderitz to Chaimas Bay south of the harbour town and 30 km into the Atlantic Ocean. The sweep of sea contains many islands, islets and rocky outcrops that support large numbers of birds and mammals. This core marine conservation area will also be part of the NSCNP.

In 2008 the NWR entered into a number of Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreements for the re-development of Daan Viljoen (Prosperity Group); Von Bach, Miles 72 & 108 and Jakkalsputz (Tungeni Investments (Pty) Ltd); Mile 14 (Pisces Investment Holding No 21 (Pty) Ltd); and Reho Spa (Reho Spa Resorts (Pty) Ltd in partnership with the Rehoboth Town Council); and the management of all petrol stations in NWR camps (DPF Energy and Minerals).
Since independence the private sector has become increasingly involved in wildlife conservation and there has been a rapid escalation in the number and size of private conservation areas.
