The Kunene Region
Consisting of Kaokoland and the northern section of Damaraland, the Kunene Region lies north of the Ugab River. It was named after the Kunene River, the border between north-western Namibia and Angola. The main centres in this region, Opuwo, Khorixas, Kamanjab and Ruacana, are linked with well-maintained gravel roads, whereas Khorixas and Kamanjab are linked with Outjo by tarred roads.

Otjikoto and Guinas lakes
A unique museum had its origins in 1915 when retreating German forces dumped their military equipment into Lake Otjikoto, about 24 km north-west of Tsumeb during the South West Africa Campaign.

The revived Ambolandbahn
A railway project that was abandoned over eighty years ago has been revived and will be providing employment for Namibians for many years to come. Construction of the Tsumeb-Ondangwa-Oshikango extension was commenced at the end of 2004.

Khorixas and environs
Just outside the town of Khorixas, the unofficial capital of the former Damaraland, is the extensive Khorixas Rest Camp. It houses a Namib-i office and is a convenient springboard from which to explore the many attractions in the surroundings.

Finger rock
Dominating the landscape when travelling westwards en route to Khorixas, 95 km west of Outjo, is the Ugab Vingerklip (Finger Rock) situated amongst the rugged Ugab Terraces. About 35 m high, this distinctive monolith has been moulded into its curious shape by erosion spanning many millennia.

Twyfelfontein and surroundings
To the west of Khorixas is Twyfelfontein (meaning doubtful fountain), a massive, open-air art gallery that is of great interest to international rock-art connoisseurs. The 2 000-plus rock engravings represent one of Africa’s largest and most important rock-art concentrations.

Kaokoland’s famous ‘desert’ elephants
In Kaokoland the desert-adapted elephant home ranges cover as much as 3 000 km2, with the animals trekking up to 200 km in search of water.

Epupa Falls
With its scenically beautiful surroundings, Epupa is one of Namibia’s prime tourist destinations. The falls are a series of cascades where the Kunene River drops a total of 60 m over a distance of about 1.5 km, dividing into a multitude of channels and forming a myriad of rock pools. It is possible to swim in these pools, but keep a lookout for crocodiles!
